Calendar! Our Chamber Music Concert is set for April 19, a Sunday afternoon at 3. Join us at the beautiful Franklin Park Performing Arts Center, 36441 Blueridge View Lane in Purcellville. The scenery outside, and the music inside, will combine to welcome spring in fine fashion. The program features some familiar and not so familiar works by J.C. Bach, Beethoven, Doppler, Poulenc and York Bowen -- there's something for everyone! Tickets: door/advance = Adult $12/$10, Senior $10/$8. Those age 18 and under always enjoy free admission at Symphony concerts. May 2 is the date for our Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra concert at Harper Park Middle School in Leesburg. Under the Baton of Dr. Yeong Su Kim, the Youth Orchestra will perform works by Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Dukas, Schubert and others. Our young performers are both talented and energetic about the music they love -- and you can share all of that with them. Admission is free for all. The weekend of May 16/17 brings our "Rainbows and Stars" concert to the performance stage, featuring some very special solo appearances by Fedor Ouspensky, violin, and Axel Biniaz-Harris, piano, the brilliant young winners of the Levine School of Music's prestigious Cogen Competition. The program also includes Sibelius' tone poem "En Saga" and Beethoven's elegant Symphony #4. It's sure to be memorable and exciting. More details in our next Newsletter issue, or online now. SAVE June 14, a Sunday afternoon beginning at 4, for our Annual Gala entitled "Celebrate the Symphony." We'll be together at the Briar Patch Inn Bed & Breakfast in Middleburg. Now it could be that "gala" is an understatement here, for this is to be a splendid celebration in every way. Examples: guests will enjoy a gracious evening in a beautiful setting featuring food, wine, and music performed by musicians of the Loudoun Symphony. Moreover you'll be with other folks who love music, enjoy good conversation and fine food...all in a setting of charm and relaxation. We'll start in the Fox Den foyer with a special guest cocktail reception with delicious hors d’oeuvres, delightful flute and harp music, and a Silent Auction featuring art, jewelry, travel, and an array of other interesting and unique items. Guests will move deeper into the Briar Patch's Fox Den for an informal supper and dessert while enjoying the music of the Symphony, under the direction of Maestro Mark Allen McCoy. The evening will highlight a special performance by the winner of the “Loudoun’s Got Talent: Youth Edition” as detailed elsewhere in this newsletter. Individual tickets for the Gala are $75, $25 of which is tax-deductible! Join us as we bring our 2008-2009 Season to a close in the best possible way. Cameras are encouraged! More details? Buy tickets? We're at www.loudounsymphony.org (Don O'Brien) Pet a Piccolo or Try a Trombone! The Symphony, along with the Rust Library and our good friends at Melodee Music, will host two Instrumental "Petting Zoos" very soon. They're chances to see, touch, listen to and try out some of the instruments heard at our concerts. FREE (which is good) and fascinating (which is better) for youngsters of all ages curious about music and how it's made. (Perhaps a visit to one of our Zoos will boost a hidden talent or two...and, one day, an appearance at "Loudoun's Got Talent: Youth Edition." Music rewards in many surprising ways -- even scholarships!) So, mark your calendar: 1. Saturday, April 18 at 2 pm: Wells Fargo Bank – 30 Catoctin Circle SE in Leesburg. 2. Saturday, May 9 at 2 pm: Ashburn Library in Ashburn. (Don O'Brien) |
Loudoun's Got Talent;
Talent Gets Scholarships Yes, the 1st Annual "Loudoun's Got Talent: Youth Edition" community tradition is off to a great start, but it might be that the young people you know have yet to get the word. There's still time! If you do know of a talented student (or the parents of a high schooler who may know someone), now is the time to encourage a visit to our Web site. Individuals can register at www.loudounsymphony.org Here's what you need to know: 1. Every high school student in the county with music-performance talent is eligible. (Individual performers only.) 2. Categories include both Instrumental and Vocal. The registration fee is $25. 3. Registration deadline has been extended to April 24th! 4. Auditions are on May 2nd at Stone Bridge HS. 5. Top-10 Concert on May 24th. --1st place winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship --2nd place: $500 --3rd Place: $250 PLUS 6. The First Place Winner will have an opportunity to perform at the June 14th Loudoun Symphony Gala, and at the December 2009 Loudoun Symphony Holiday concert! Yes, this is the ideal opportunity for talented students to step forward and present themselves and their skills to a panel of experienced and accomplished musicians. And then...who knows? So please, get on the phone right now and tell every parent and student you know about this remarkable chance. Give them the details above, and encourage them to go to the Web site and register. (Don O'Brien) No Talent? No Problem! There's a singular category for non-students too: Sponsorship! Since you (as an individual or business) can see the value of encouraging serious musical talent, then you also see the value of financially supporting this community project. Everyone wins: in return for certain levels of support you'll get advertising space in the Symphony's Playbill throughout the 2009-2010 Concert season, your name on our Website's Major Donor page, acknowledgement in every press release concerning the competition and its results -- and a good deal more. Perhaps a tax-deduction as well. And no matter the level of your support, you will be doing the right thing for our students and our community. We need the support of the whole community to nake this event a success. Please call the Symphony office at 703-771-8287 for more information, or to become a Sponsor.
